The idea of a daily routine always scared the hell out of me and read more like daily rut. After having a baby though, I've truly realized the importance of a routine not only for baby, but for mama too! Having a good idea when she'll need to eat, sleep, and yes, even poop, has made it so much easier for me to be productive and get in my much needed daily run. My husband works very long hours as a surgical resident, often having to be in the hospital before 6AM and not home until 6:30PM at the earliest. I guess some people would set their alarm clocks to 4:30AM to get their runs in... I am NOT one of those people. I also have no desire to wait until he gets home, not only because it is completely unpredictable but mostly because it feels so much better to get a run done earlier!
Here is an approximate schedule of our daily routine.
7:00 AM Wake up and milk feed.
7:30 AM Breakfast - I set baby up with breakfast and let her feed herself so I can eat and drink my coffee!
7:45 AM Let baby play in our baby gated area while I clean up kitchen.
8:00 AM Wear baby in carrier and take the dog for a walk outside.
8:30 AM Playtime. (If I'm feeling ambitious, I sometimes use this block before her morning nap to go to grocery store or run any other quick errands I need to, but we live in the city so usually don't drive at this time to avoid morning traffic.)
9:45 AM Morning nap. I use the morning nap to finish cleaning up, get laundry in, get ready to head out for run/gym, and if there's any time left, finish my coffee!
10:30 AM Wake up and milk feed.
10:45 AM Snack.
11:00 AM Exercise time! Either go to gym to use treadmill, (there's a child watch center at my gym that is amazing!) or head outside for a run with the jogger.
12:15 PM Lunch. Again, I set baby up with her lunch so I can eat at the same time.
12:45 PM Lunch cleanup. Lunch and Dinner usually require a baby rinse in the kitchen sink too!
1:00 PM Playtime.
1:45 PM Milk feed if baby wants any.
2:00 PM Afternoon nap. This is shower time for Mama! Baby's afternoon nap is usually a bit longer, 1 1/2 hours or so. I usually have another cup of coffee, finish household chores, prep dinner, and work on any projects I have going on.
3:30 PM Wake up and milk feed.
3:45 PM Snack.
4:00 PM Playtime. If I had errands to run earlier in the day, I sometimes use this block to go for a run.
5:15 PM Dinner. Set baby up with dinner and get our dinner going too.
6:00 PM Cleanup and let baby play.
6:30 PM Bath time. If my husband is home from work, this is his job and they both love it! It also give's me a chance to either finish our dinner or just sit on my butt and relax for ten minutes!
6:45 PM Final milk feed and bedtime routine.
7:00 PM Bedtime.
Overnight - At this point, baby is sleeping 7PM-7AM most nights with the occasional wakeup. I usually let her try and settle herself for a few minutes, if she does not, I go in and feed her and she falls back asleep pretty quickly.
